COLUMBIA, S.C. (March May 31, 2017) Statewide cybersecurity organization SC Cyber announced the winners of South Carolina’s “NSA Day of Cyber” School Challenge at the SC Cyber 2017 Summit held May 23 in Columbia, SC. Fort Dorchester High School (N.Charleston) finished atop the cyber scoreboard with over 300 students completing the online workshop and will receive a $1,000 technology award from SC Cyber.

ECPI University matched the award to provide Ft. Dorchester with a second $1,000 check

“We are excited for Fort Dorchester High School and applaud their business education teachers for recognizing the value of the NSA Day of Cyber program,” said Tom Scott, SC Cyber Executive Director. “Finishing a close second, and certainly deserving of an award was Langley-Bath-Clearwater Middle School who had 65% female completers in a traditionally male dominated profession.”

The challenge, which began March 1 and ran through the end of April, allowed participating students to take part in rigorous, real-life virtual cyber scenarios, discover the skills and tools used by the NSA cyber professionals, and explore the vast number of careers in cybersecurity.  Students each received an individualized Cyber Resume and NSA Certificate of Completion.

“The “Day of Cyber” School Challenge introduced students to careers in high-demand sectors like cyber security,” said Scott, “The key to successfully navigating our new digital economy and supporting the growing cyber security ecosystem within South Carolina is the investment in our workforce and the necessary educational foundations that a program such as this provides for students.”

Schools competed for the highest student participation over the course of the competition. The school with the highest student participation won a cash prize that will go towards enhancing cyber programs within their school.

“Cybersecurity is the ‘space race’ of our generation, and cyber skills are the new alphabet,” said LifeJourney CEO Rick Geritz. “Equipping teachers and parents with the tools they need to bring cyber into the classroom is imperative. SC Cyber’s leadership to prioritize cyber security skills will not only accelerate South Carolina’s workforce, but also serve as a model for the nation.”
